What New Leaf Offers
Situated on Rotten Row, and adjacent to Victoria Park in Southport, our purpose-built New Leaf Garden Centre is part of the New Directions’ North Hub.
Our main focus at New Leaf is to support and develop adults with learning and physical disabilities, including those on the autistic spectrum. New Leaf encourages adults to learn, develop and apply new practical gardening skills, thus enabling them to improve their confidence and well-being, and provide a sense of achievement, all within a safe, outdoor learning environment.
Our facilities allow us to grow from seed, and cultivate a wide, varied selection of plants and vegetables using our Victorian Greenhouse and Polytunnel. We are also developing a wildlife area, consisting of bird feeders, nesting boxes, insect houses, shrubs and flowers, to encourage a variety of bees, birds and insects to visit the site.
We also have a quiet, calming seated area, where sensory plants such as herbs, lavender and honeysuckle have been planted, and this area provides a relaxing open space.
Our general activities include growing plants and vegetables, making beautiful hanging baskets and flower planters, garden-related items and seasonal decorations, all of which are made available for sale to the general public at our events throughout the year.
New Leaf also features a gardening shop, where helpful staff provide a warm and friendly welcome to all, and a wide selection of plants and garden-related goods can be purchased at very reasonable prices.
New Leaf is operated by a team of dedicated staff whose prime objective is to advise our visitors, develop and maintain the centre to the highest standards, and also allow the service users to gain essential practical and life skills in a relaxed, friendly and caring environment.
We work closely with local schools, offering educational sessions and task-setting, whilst also offering pupils the chance to try out different tasks and vocations.
Another important part of what we do is to acknowledge the importance of the seasons within the growing calendar, and we hold fund-raising events throughout the year, including the Summer fair, Halloween and the Christmas fair.
These events allow us to sell, to the public, our huge range of plants, hanging baskets, holly wreaths, Christmas trees and many other items.
We also have a wide selection of seasonal refreshments available at each event, and all of the money raised is reinvested back into New Leaf to buy additional plants and equipment.
New Leaf actively encourages volunteering, so if you have some spare time on your hands, and want to make a real difference in people’s lives, or just want to learn new skills yourself, please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information.
