This World Down Syndrome Awareness Week coincided perfectly with the International Day of Happiness (March 20th). We at New Directions were thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of the people we support!
James: A Beacon of Enthusiasm
Many know James as a familiar and enthusiastic face at New Directions. He actively participates in everything from National Care Forum conferences to Co-Production Week. He even lights up the stage at New Centre Stage and generously supports others by helping them learn online safeguarding training. James truly embodies the fulfilling life people with Down syndrome can achieve.
James’ commitment extends beyond the New Centre Stage. He recently began volunteering at a Barnardo’s charity shop, contributing to the organization’s mission while developing valuable skills.
Celebrating Achievements on Stage
New Directions is committed to fostering a nurturing environment where individuals with Down Syndrome can explore their talents. Our drama programme, New Centre Stage, has been a launchpad for many inspiring stories.
- Andrea: She bravely stepped into the spotlight with a solo “On My Own” performance from Les Misérables, showcasing her newfound confidence. She also landed leading roles in The Wizard of Oz and Blood Brothers.
- Harriet: A dedicated performer for 20 years! Her impressive repertoire includes captivating audiences as Belle in Beauty and the Beast and tackling iconic roles like the Good Fairy in The Wizard of Oz.
- Emma: Has blossomed at New Centre Stage, captivating audiences with solo dance performances and leading roles in productions like The Wizard of Oz.
Conquering Fears and Building Confidence
Last year, Elise decided she wanted to conquer her fear of water and gain the confidence to enjoy swimming pools on holiday. With the support of her Shared Lives carer, Gill, Elise embarked on a journey of private swimming lessons.
Elise’s dedication and perseverance have paid off in incredible ways! She has developed a newfound confidence in the water and can now comfortably swim in the shallow end. Even dipping her head underwater is a mastered skill, although she admits it’s not her favourite part!
Now living with Sarah, Elise eagerly awaits the purchase of a swim jacket. This exciting addition to her wardrobe will pave the way for future poolside adventures with her boyfriend, Robbie.
Rekindling Friendships and Fulfilling Dreams
David and Jo, supported by New Directions’ Shared Lives and Supported Living Services, unexpectedly reconnected at a festive gathering. This chance encounter rekindled a friendship years in the making. David, a lifelong Mickey Mouse enthusiast, also fulfilled a dream by visiting Disneyland Paris thanks to the support of his Shared Lives carer, Sheila.
Stephanie: Living a Fulfilling Life
Stephanie thrives in her Shared Lives placement with Caroline and Nik Wood. They actively support her desire for new experiences, from international vacations to engaging in arts and crafts at home.
“These are just a few examples of how New Directions empowers individuals with Down Syndrome to live fulfilling and independent lives. We proudly celebrate their achievements and our services’ positive impact in supporting individuals on their journey.“ – Managing Director Mark Fox
