More Than Just a Game
The tournament wasn’t just about scoring goals; it was about creating a space for individuals with additional support needs to connect, have fun, and showcase their abilities. Adapted rules and a supportive environment ensured everyone could participate at their own pace, building confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
From perfectly placed passes and determined runs down the wing to the pure joy of being part of a team, the smiles on everyone’s faces said it all. Beyond technical skills, the tournament nurtured vital teamwork abilities. Players learned to communicate effectively, strategise, and celebrate each other’s successes. This sense of camaraderie and collaboration is a key element in reaching one’s full potential, both on and off the pitch.
A Day of Friendly Competition
We were delighted to welcome the Skem Men-Aces to the tournament. Their participation added a layer of friendly competition and a chance to build connections outside South Hub. The day culminated in a nail-biting final between teams representing England and Spain, mirroring the Euros. After a tense game, contrary to the real thing, England emerged victorious in a heart-stopping penalty shootout.
Honouring Ian Haughton’s Legacy
It was an honour to have Ian’s mother, Val Haughton, join us for the day’s festivities. Val has been a champion for Ian and everyone who attends South Hub. She graciously handed out awards to all the players, a touching tribute to her son’s life and passion for football. If you would like to read more about who Ian was head here.
Awarding Excellence
After a day of fantastic football, we celebrated everyone’s achievements. Coach Carl from the Aces spoke about the sport’s beautiful and inclusive nature. The winning England team, comprised of Mikey, Dan, Ste, Harrison, Mike, Luke, and George, proudly received their trophy.
Mark impressed throughout the tournament with his stellar goalkeeping skills. He was awarded Player of the Tournament, a well-deserved recognition after winning the Goalie of the Tournament category last year.
A Huge Thank You
We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this day possible:
- Karl Hughes and the entire South Hub staff for their outstanding organisation.
- The team at Goals Netherton for providing a fantastic venue.
- Coach Carl and the Skem Men-Aces for their participation and sportsmanship.
- All the players who brought their enthusiasm and talent to the pitch.
- And of course, Val Haughton, for her unwavering support and for gracing us with her presence.
The South Hub Ian Haughton Memorial Football Tournament was a resounding success. It was a day that celebrated inclusion, teamwork, and the power of sport to unlock potential. We look forward to continuing this tradition next year and creating even more memories!
