At New Directions, we believe in fostering a culture of collaboration and co-production. This means working hand-in-hand with the people we support to ensure their voices are heard, and their experiences are valued. Today, we’d like to shine a spotlight on three incredible individuals – Hannah, James, and Kevin – who exemplify the power of co-production in action.
Hannah: Sharing Experiences and Advocating for Change
Hannah, supported by our Supported Living Service, embodies the spirit of co-production. In the past, she generously volunteered her time at the Waterloo Park Day Centre, a vibrant hub for older adults.
Hannah’s passion for change extends beyond New Directions.
Collaborating with MENCAP, she has delivered powerful talks in schools, raising awareness about the stigma and discrimination faced by people with support needs. By sharing her firsthand experiences, Hannah makes a significant difference in promoting understanding and inclusion.
“I enjoy going to MENCAP, and with them, I have been involved in a HATE CRIME awareness session for schoolchildren to help them understand how words can be hurtful to people with learning disabilities like me.” – Hannah Owens
James: From Conference Collaboration to Empowering Others
Living in a Shared Lives family facilitated by New Directions, James has actively participated in co-production initiatives. He was pivotal in crafting workshops at the National Care Forum Conference. The workshops focused on technology and those with complex needs and drew upon James’ experiences and perspectives.
James doesn’t stop there. He currently volunteers at a Barnados charity shop, demonstrating his commitment to giving back to the community. His willingness to share his knowledge and lend a helping hand is truly inspiring.
Kevin: Shaping the Shared Lives Experience
Kevin, also supported through the Shared Lives scheme, is another shining example of co-production in action. He has actively participated in interview panels, helping to select potential candidates for roles within the Shared Lives team. Kevin has directly contributed to deciding who will provide his care and support.
Kevin’s contributions ensure that the Shared Lives experience continues to evolve and meet the ever-changing needs of individuals like himself. His commitment to co-production plays a vital role in shaping a positive future for the program.
The Shared Success Story of Co-Production
The stories of Hannah, James, and Kevin are a testament to the power of co-production. By collaborating with the people we support, we gain invaluable insights and create truly person-centred services. Together, we can build a more inclusive and fulfilling future for all.
“I continually see fantastic examples across the company of staff investing time, flexibility, creativity, and vision embracing empowerment and co-production. This is having a real impact on people’s lives. We are a learning organisation on a journey to ensure that all those involved in services should have equal roles in creating and delivering those services.” – Managing Director Mark Fox
