Shared Lives Stands Out At The National Care Forum Conference

New Directions took a unique approach to their presentation at this year's National Care Forum conference, emphasising the importance of lived experience. They collaborated with three members of their Shared Lives scheme – Thomas Halliwell, Glenn Ashton, and James Andrew Ashton – to showcase the impact of technology on their lives.

Shared Lives

A passionate Liverpool supporter and tea enthusiast, Thomas explained how technology has fostered his independence and social connections. Glenn, a creative individual who enjoys writing and gardening projects, discussed how technology helps him manage his thoughts and feelings. A lively and socially active person, James talked about technology’s role in keeping him connected during the pandemic and his love of learning online. These are just three examples of how technology kept Shared Lives connected during the pandemic.

Glenn and James even joined the New Directions team at the conference, assisting with workshops and answering questions after the presentation. Their presence ensured a well-rounded perspective on the topic.

Sharing the Journey: Challenges and Successes

The New Directions presentation traced the journey of introducing greater access to technology within the Shared Lives scheme. The team openly discussed the benefits, including increased independence, and challenges, like potential online dangers.

The presentation highlighted the crucial steps taken to ensure user safety. New Directions, in collaboration with the Merseyside Police Service and People First, developed a comprehensive set of training courses and safety measures.

Workshops Foster Understanding

James and Glenn played a crucial role in crafting workshops offered at the conference. These workshops provided valuable insights for other organisations considering introducing technology to individuals with complex needs. The workshops explored the challenges faced by New Directions and the solutions they implemented.

Shared Lives Makes a Mark

New Directions’ Shared Lives manager Karen Bennett reflected on the positive experience. “We were initially nervous about presenting a workshop, but thanks to Thomas, James, and Glenn sharing their stories, we were able to showcase the power of the Shared Lives scheme,” she said. “The feedback was exceptional, and it was heartwarming to see James and Glenn confidently share their experiences.”

Co-Production

Since his time supporting the team at the National Care Forum Conference, James has begun teaching our online safety safeguarding training to others with complex learning disabilities at our Shared Lives offices in Chase Heys.
